In the beginning of the year - I focus on getting to know my kids and their families. I think it's a great way to foster home-school attachments. I found this cute Family Tree diagram that I'm going to send home with my kiddos. I like it because it is very open-ended and they can add whomever they want to their tree - and in any order they want.
The other photo shows a "Family Crest."
In the beginning of the year we like to have the students create a collage of pictures or drawings of their families and we would have them complete this at home and bring it it to share with their class. Then we will designate a particular wall to put up the collages and keep them there all year.

That 's a great idea! I'm going to do that too! I usually have the families create an "All About Me" page - but hadn't thought of doing an "About My Family" page. Thanks for sharing that idea.
ReplyDeleteWe have done something similar to this before, but what they kids absolutely have loved is when they bring in a photo of their family and post it on a bigger tree that we create in our classroom. The children get to show their friends who the members of their family are and they can go look at the picture at any given moment. This idea has worked for us and the children really enjoy it. We also take pictures of the children with their families throughout the year and post the pictures throughout the classroom!
ReplyDeleteI think that is really important that teachers include families since the begging of the school year. A good way to do it is sending activities that they can do as a family. At the beginning of the school year I implement an activity call “My Family Album” with this activity the family has the opportunity to work together creating an album using family pictures, drawings and decorating the album the way they want. I also send a paper call “My Biography” which is add it to Child’s Portfolio. Families really enjoy doing this activities with children.

That's a great idea Lourdes! I think providing tips for family activities is a wonderful way to involve the family. Maybe that can include links to events around the community. A really important part of this is asking for pictures and drawings from the families.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing and being the first person to post!
My family curriculum idea is a templete of Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do you See?
ReplyDeleteChildren can use their own family pictures and glue them onto the corresponding page. Ideal for preschooler's story time or show and tell.

ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea Monica. Thank's for sharing that. Young children are still learning the "titles" of family members and singing with the visuals will really help reinforce these names. :)
ReplyDeleteAt the beginning of the year we ask the parents to write a bibliography about their child. I have read many heartwarming stories. Parents express the love for their children and share with us bits about their cultures, beliefs, how they spend time together as a family, why they selected their child's name and what it means, and so much more. Each story is unique. I like the idea on your blog and I am thinking of merging both ideas this year.
ReplyDeleteWe also have at least three family night's in which the parents and children engage in "learning games" that support our curriculum. These events are so engaging, because the parent is gaining a better understanding of how children learn through play, how it builds brain development and the children LOVE that their parent is their giving them this uninterrupted time. These events also provide the opportunity to strengthen the home- school connection as the parents provide feedback to teachers related to their experience in the activities and we have seen that parents are more apt to do the learning games sent home with their children and provide written documentation or work samples that teachers may include in the portfolios and assist teachers individualize for each child.
I really love the idea of family nights where parents play learning games with their children at school. That is great and yes - it is also a great way to support the home-school connection and highlight the documentation of their children's learning. We are also doing portfolios this year and I love it! The children love to get out their portfolios and look at al the pictures, work samples and family projects that we include in there. We will talk more about portfolios in another blog assignment. Thanks for your post. It was really informative!

ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the family tree diagram, it is very unique and special. I'll love to use your idea to include this activity in every child's portfolio; Every year we ask families to participate in elaborating a biography for their child, and this idea is perfect, I will love to extend it by asking each family to tell a story about their child and this will be one of their first projects as a family.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing
Respectfully,
Samantha Rivero
I like the family tree because it gives the kids a chance to take about how everyone is related in their family. Even though young children may not understand each relation - I thinks it's still valuable for them to hear the stories and explanations of how they are all related.

ReplyDeleteThe activity that I do with my children is a poster with the tittle "All About Me" which they have to be creatives with their families and come up with a poster that contains their favvorite food, if they have a pet, a picture of their family, favorite color, favorite sport or game, movie. anything that best interest them. Kids love to shre somethigs that they made with their parents and also they love to see it around the classroom posted.
ReplyDeleteKnowledge about their family history gives children of all ages a sense of their place in the world because Children love to learn about the world they live in as well as the family they belong to. I like this idea too. Right now I do not have my own classroom but I have many ideas. One is that I would like to put a tree with dead branches on the wall and on each of the branches would put the photo of each family, also below the tree I would like to put a larger map with the five continents, since today there are many people from different continents and race, so in that way the children are given an idea where are they from and come every one of their friends. In the map I would put the child's name on the continent where they are. A family tree in the class gives them the experience to meet each of the members of their classmates because children do not always manage to meet and interact with the entire family of their friends, but they can know them that way. Another thing is involve them talking about their families: What they like to do when they are together? Their interests? The names of each of the members/family? etc. Family tree is one lesson or activity that we just couldn’t miss out because it’s important for parents and educators to tell their children about these people and to make them part of the children’s lives.

My idea for promoting the family in the curriculum is this cute house that I saw in one of the classroom that I would love to share with you guys. It a house made out of paper and the students take it home and get to decorated the house and cut pictures of their family and glue it at the house and then they take it back to the classroom they tell you about their family and who they are. And the best part of it is that they put it like and album of all the students’ houses with pictures, and its display in the reading area where all the kids get to see their friends’ family.
ReplyDeleteAngelica Flores
That's a good one Angelica! I love that idea and also the idea of turning each child's page into an album. They love it when we make "class books."
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!

Hello Everyone,
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I believe that promoting the Family Tree in every teachers curriculum will be a great idea because it is a very unique activity. As a matter of fact, doing this activity and then putting it on the wall or in a portfolio will make the children feel more connected to their families. In fact, children will feel a sense of comfortability since the environment of the classroom will be more like a house. I do not have my own classroom at this moment but when I do I will sure include the Family tree diagram in my curriculum because it is a special activity in where children get to see their friends family.
-Stephany Torres
I believe that families should always be part of the children classroom. One of the ways that my program promotes families in our classroom is by asking the parents to bring a family picture to add to our classroom family tree or photo album. Children share something special about each family member and then they have the choice to add the picture to our family tree or classroom’s family album which is placed in our quiet area for children to hold when they feel sad or miss their family. At the beginning of the year we also invite parent to visit our classroom and to talk about their profession, culture or just to share something about their family. One time a mother came and showed the children how to make tamales, another dad share about his job as a mechanic and a grandparent came and read a book to the children.
ReplyDeleteI loved the idea for the family tree project. In the past I have also send home an opened ended activity. It is a white piece of construction paper where the children can draw each and every family member as they see them in their own eyes. I ask the parent to bring in a family picture and we make a class book with the drawings and pictures. We include it in our library and children are able to go to it and look through and talk about their families.
ReplyDelete~Veronica Cornejo
In order to promote family involvement I would have the children bring a picture of them with their parents or with their entire family. I would have a designated area for these pictures and have them at eye level for children so they can go and hang out with those pictures whenever they are feeling down.

I think the topic about “my family” is very important, I like how the children start to talk about their family members and what they like to do. I think that families are also important for the classroom we tell the children that “we are a family”. When I worked on a center we asked the children to bring a poster with pictures about their families and we posted them around the classroom, the children always came to the pictures and talked about them with their friends. But I also liked the idea of the family tree, I will implement it.
ReplyDeleteYolanda Padilla
ReplyDeleteI promote "My Family" curriculum by posting pictures of the families on one of my
walls in the classroom, subsequently I have each child create a book about who is in their family and what they enjoy doing together. I also take pictures of the families with their children that attend my classroom at drop off or pick up time or they can bring in a picture of their family and put it up on the wall themselves. I like the family
tree project and may implement it in my family theme curriculum.
My families are currently working on a small book. Every week while working on the Creative Curriculum book's activities, we take picture and paste them on each page. Our goals is to have as many as possible by the end of the program year. I also have given my families new ideas in creating a family tree and post it in their child's room and to praise their work. There are so many ideas that I provide for my families and also getting their ideas as well. Creativity is fun :)

I really love all the ideas about introducing “My family” curriculum. I like the activity of the diagram. Another way to incorporate “My family” curriculum is by sending a small activity book about four pages long. On the first page it can say, “This is me, name of the child.” On the second page it can say, “This is my family.” On the third page it can say, “Me and my family like…” On the fourth page it can say, “I love my family.” The next step is parent involvement. This step will require the parents’ participation by gathering a picture(s) of their child, picture(s) of family members, and picture(s) of an activity that they all have done together. These pictures will be pasted on the first three pages of the book and on the last page the child will draw with crayons. You can display the books in the classroom and also you can encourage every student to talk about their book. This will help the child in so many areas of development and also promote parent involvement.
ReplyDeleteThe way I use to promote family when I worked in a classroom is by having the children bring pictures of their family to share with their peers. During share time the children would talk about the pictures they brought and the people on the pictures. When they were done sharing, the pictures would go up on our family tree wall in the classroom. The pictures would remain on the wall until the end of the school year.
ReplyDeleteIn the past I have used 3 different methods to promote family in the classroom setting so my children feel confort in the classroom. I once created a giant tree out of butcher paper in the corner of my classroom and gave each family an apple made of construction paper, they were allowed to place a family photo and bring it back to place on the tree, helping us create our own little family tree in the classroom. Along side I had 2 photo albums around the classroom children could see and it had family pictures their parents shared with us for the school year and received back at the end of it. I really like the idea of this template because it can be turned into a book or simply hanged on the wall.
ReplyDeleteI think it is an awesome idea to incorporate family curriculum into the classroom. This will help give many ideas how how big a child's family is, what their parents or guardians do, and how their family life is at home. A family tree is a good thing because it will show who is the primary care taker of the child wether it be parents, grand parents, aunts, uncles etc. A family portrait with small bio of each family member is helpful as well. Ive seen this done in daycares when I was in Hawaii and it came to be a good tool to connect school and home.
ReplyDeleteI've never worked in a family tree before, but it would be a perfect idea to get started now that we are talking about family and community. I saw this project in a kindergarten at my college and it looked great. I saw parents and kids searching for their picture with a big smile in their face.

I like family curriculum, in the past I promote family tree. I have the bring picture of their family and paste on construction paper and put it on the wall. The children love showing their friends their family. The children can add new picture if there is a change in the family.
ReplyDeleteLind Lee
Hello,
ReplyDeleteIn my center we always have a family night which is in the fall. In our classroom every teacher has a family board or a family tree. When the children start they bring a family picture and talk about whos in the picture. For are toddlers we do a family book. We send home construction paper different colors and the family's do it with their child writing little story's. Then the teachers will laminate the book. We put them on the table during free play and its cute to see the children go grab their family book and look thru the pictures.
Family is a very important part of a child's life. As educators we need to keep an open nonjudgmental mind. A family can be anyone that the child trusts, loves and cares about; they can either be living with them or far away. I love the ideas of making a family tree and a family crest with the children because this gives them the opportunity to share their most important part of their life with their teachers and peers. It also gives us an insight of the child’s family.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I like to do is take pictures of families the first week or so when the children enter the program. I then laminate and frame the pictures so they last, then I put it up across the walls on the children’s eye level so they can interact and look at the different families. Another great idea is making a family picture book with the children, which includes the children’s favorite pictures of their families as well as drawings of their families. This is a great way to comfort and make the classroom feel close to home.
I believe that the family is the heart of the community. Every family needs to have a curriculum to interact and support each member of the family specially the children. This will straighten the whole family.
ReplyDeleteAs a Home Base Teacher we use the Home to School Activity Sheet every day and the Color Me Healthy Newspaper every month to encourage the families to perform different activities. I read one of these newspaper at every visit. After reading the paper I introduce the students to one of the activities. I encourage the parents to do the activities with their children. This helps the families bound and straightens the community.
